Everything I Got Wrong in Year One

The technical mistakes of first year composting are well documented and easy to fix. The beliefs underneath them are the harder problem, because they are what send you looking for the wrong solution. Almost everything that went wrong early came from treating composting as a recipe rather than a range.

Believing it was a recipe

The first mental error is precision anxiety. You read that the target is thirty parts carbon to one part nitrogen and you start trying to hit a number, which is impossible without a laboratory and pointless in a garden.

Composting is not a recipe with a pass mark. It is a wide range with soft edges. Roughly half browns and half greens by volume, damp but not wet, and the pile does the rest. Nothing bad happens at 25:1 or 40:1; it simply goes a bit faster or slower.

The cost of the recipe mindset is not a failed pile. It is that you spend your attention on the variable you cannot measure and ignore the two you can: moisture and air.

Reading smell as failure rather than information

A pile that smells sour feels like a verdict. It is actually the most useful diagnostic you get, and it is specific. Sour means too wet and airless. Ammonia means too much nitrogen. Rotten eggs means deep anaerobic pockets. Each points at a different fix.

The related error is expecting a healthy pile to smell of nothing. It should smell of forest floor after rain. If you have that, you are being told the pile is fine, which is information too.

Trusting the internet over the pile in front of me

This is the one that took longest to unlearn. Search any composting question and you get confident, contradictory answers, most written by people who have never opened that particular bin in November.

The pile is the ground truth. Squeeze a handful from the middle and it tells you about moisture immediately. Smell it and it tells you about air. Look at whether the volume has dropped and it tells you whether anything is happening. All three take ten seconds and beat any article, including this one.

Why this is hard: composting has a brutally slow feedback loop. Get it wrong in April and the evidence arrives in November. That delay is what makes people trust text over observation, because the text answers immediately and the pile does not.

Judging the pile by its surface

The top of any heap is the newest material, so it always looks unfinished. For a year I assessed progress by looking at the bit that is guaranteed to look worst.

What is actually happening is at the bottom, and in a continuously fed single bin you cannot get at it without excavating the whole thing. That is not a decomposition problem, it is an access problem, and it has a structural fix rather than a technique one. See the two bin upgrade.

Thinking finished compost was the point

Year one is spent chasing a product: dark, crumbly, sieve-ready compost. That is a reasonable goal and it is not really the point.

The point is soil that holds water, drains properly and feeds things. Half finished compost spread as a surface mulch in autumn does most of that job by spring, and it required none of the turning, sieving or waiting. Perfect compost is nice. Adequate compost applied is better than perfect compost still in the bin.

Overestimating effort, underestimating time

The instinct when a pile is slow is to do something to it. Turn it, add something, buy something. Usually the correct intervention is to check moisture and then leave it alone for another two months.

Almost everything that goes wrong in a compost heap is fixed by water, air or patience, in that order of frequency, and only the first two require you to do anything.

What actually changes

Not the technique. By year two the heap gets less attention, not more: a look, a squeeze, browns when it looks wet, water when it looks dry, a turn when there is time. The difference is that the observations are quick and the responses are small.

The single habit worth adopting on day one is keeping dry material beside the bin. It prevents more problems than every other intervention combined, and it costs nothing but a sack of leaves in October.
