How pages are written

Every page is written to answer its question in the opening sentence. Where a claim is contested in the literature or in practice, the page says so rather than picking whichever answer sounds most authoritative.

Where our information comes from

University extension research, peer-reviewed soil science where it exists, and direct experience of running compost systems in a cold climate. Where a widely repeated claim has weak evidence behind it, coffee grounds repelling slugs, for instance, we say that explicitly.

Product recommendations

We do not recommend equipment we have not used. This means our buying guides cover fewer products than competing sites and appear later. That is a deliberate trade.

How this site makes money

Affiliate commissions on some product links, and digital products we produce ourselves. Affiliate relationships never determine what gets recommended or how it is described. Disclosure appears above the fold on any page containing affiliate links, see affiliate disclosure.

Corrections

If we get something wrong we fix it and say what changed. Report errors through contact.

Drafting assistance is used in producing this site. Every page is reviewed for accuracy before publication, and factual claims are checked against sources rather than accepted from a model.
